FSD: Cowls Everywhere!

Fashion School Diary: Cowls
High Neck Cowl

Regular Cowl used as back part of a skirt.

Last thursday I came in at 10:30am to my 9am Haute Couture class. Yes an hour and 30 minutes late! Good thing my teacher Karla is very considerate and nice to just let it pass. =) So our topic for the day was cowls.

A little background about cowls:
  • Came from a latin word cuculla meaning "hood and rope"
  • It is a medieval item of garment consisting of a hood and shoulder cape.
  • It is worn by re members of religious orders.
  • Usually refers to a long, hooded cloak with wide sleeves worn by monks when participating in the liturgy.
  • Developed in the middle ages,
  • They became a formal garment for those in monastic life.
  • Worn to give warmth to people who often spent long house in unheated and drafty churches.
Cowls by definition:
  • A hood or cloak worn by a monk.
  • Draped neckline used in woman's garment.
We more of tackled the definition #2 of course. Draped neckline treatment which is beautifully draped fabrics that forms a necklace like effect. It's very simple and yet elegant and sophistication it exudes with the right fabric. This is my day 2 and so far I am loving Haute Couture!

Thank you Czarina~ Those are just on the spot projects. Just to show how to make then and how it'll look like in fabrics. This has been a life long dream for me. I quit my job and went back to school. Someday I'll have my own fashion show. =)
